Reflections on the Haw Lantern
Presented as a bilingual installation at the Home Place Poetry Centre in Bellaghy, 2017
In the cycle of poetry ‘The Haw Lantern’ (1987) Seamus Heaney engages with the idea of ‘clearances’. This is also the title of one of the poems in the cycle that is dedicated to the memory of the poet’s mother, Marie Katherine Heaney. The term ‘clearances’ also comes up in a seminal poem ‘From the Frontiers of Writing’, where ‘clearances’ are referred to in relation to the Troubles, and when Heaney engages the methodology of poetic ‘clearances’ used in the process of construction of poetry as parable.
